EMF Sensitivity - Why Some People are More Sensitive to EMF Radiation Than Others

When people think of Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) they mostly picture power lines, microwaves, and cell phones. However, most people have never even heard of something called ElectroSensitivity (ES), which makes them more sensitive to electromagnetic fields which could lead to serious health problems.

What causes ES and why are some people more susceptible to it than others? Is it possible that people can become allergic to EMF’s?

What Are ElectroMagnetic Fields (EMFs)?

EMF is energy generated by all electronic devices in varying degrees depending on power output and connectivity. Some people say they feel nothing while others say they just get a headache when their cell phone is right next to their head for too long.

Exposure to RF radiation (from your cell phone) when the device is held at your head has been linked to potential health effects such as brain tumors. A Cell Phone Radio Frequency Radiation study conducted by the NTP (National Toxicology Program) has concluded and established a clear link between exposure to radiofrequency radiation (RFR) and cancer in rats.

In its draft, the National Toxicology Program (NTP) at the U.S. National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences reported that the growth of tumors in tissues and nerves near the heart of male rodents was observed.

This is after the male rats were subjected to RFR levels from 2G and 3G mobile phones, which are the standard level allowed for local tissue exposure to cell phone radiation.

How does this compare to human exposure to RF? John Bucher, a senior scientist at the NTP, said that “the tumors that were observed in rats are similar to the ones that were reported from previous researchers on the effects of frequent smartphone use in humans.” The study also recognized that the radiation from smartphones is considered as a Class 1 Human Carcinogen, similar to asbestos and smoke from tobacco. As such, the public is encouraged to reduce their exposure to harmful RFR as much as possible, even at this time and age of the Internet.

However, what about those who suffer from ES? As more and more electronics come into our homes, schools, and offices, there is a growing concern about the risks of radiation. For some people, having an abundance of electronics near them can lead to difficulty with focus and concentration, headaches, fatigue, trouble concentrating, sleep problems, anxiety attacks and panic attacks. This condition is known as EMF sensitivity or Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity Syndrome (EHS). The name “electromagnetic hypersensitivity” first appeared in 1991. Since then, many people have said they have EHS, especially as electronics have become more popular. The symptoms worsen the closer you get to electronics and can vary from person to person.

Despite the fact that EHS is a controversial topic in the medical field since there is no clear evidence that links EHS to EMF exposure, some scientists think that people cope with preexisting underlying conditions by believing they have EHS. This doesn’t conclude that EMF’s are not harmful to the body.

How To Reduce EMF Effects on the Body

One thing you can do to help reduce the effects of EMF radiation on your body is stay aware. This will let you spot any dangerous areas or exposure times, and when you find these, take steps immediately. The more aware you are of potential dangers, the easier it is to minimize your risk exposure.

Many people have no idea that exposure to EMF radiation can be detrimental to their health. Studies have shown that people with high sensitivity, whether they know it or not, often find themselves uncomfortable in places with increased levels of EMF radiation. These could include the use of cell phones, microwaves, computers and other common electronic devices. The risks of exposure don't stop there. The resultant effects can lead to a worsening effect on health including inflammatory and toxic responses in the body as well as an increase in illness and disease.

The good news is that there are many ways you can reduce your exposure risk and live a healthier life.

  • You can minimize the time spent in unsafe environments and limit contact with your personal electronics which emit EMF and RF such as your laptop and cell phone.
  • Try sleeping away from sources of EMF and set your cell phone to airplane mode.
  • Dr. Joel M. Moskowitz, Director of the Center for Family and Community Health at the University of California Berkeley, says, “Keeping your cellphone 10 inches away from your body, as compared to one-tenth of an inch, results in a 10,000-fold reduction in exposure. So, keep your phone away from your head and body,"
  • For an extra layer of protection, and for those times when keeping a safe distance from your devices is not always an option, we recommend a lab tested radiation shield. SafeSleeve integrates their FCC-accredited lab-tested shielding technology into their cell phone, tablet, and laptop cases to provide convenient and stylish protection for yourself and your devices.
